Biography
Wanda Marie Nelson, RDH, MS, NBC-HWC, has practiced as a registered dental hygienist for 40 years and earned her Masters of Science in Human Nutrition in 2000 from the University of New Haven and a Bachelors of Science as a Dental Hygiene Practitioner at the University of Bridgeport in 1989. She is a Board Certified Health and Wellness Coach having passed a rigorous exam from the NBHWC in 2022, and is a Certified Functional Medicine Health Coach from the Functional Medicine Coaching Academy, one of the finest programs in collaboration with the Institute of Functional Medicine, Cleveland Clinic. She is a Certified Functional Nutrition Counselor through Full Body Systems, and most recently a Certificate Holder in Oral Systemic Education in 2023.
To round out her education, in 2025 she accomplished a certification as a Biological Dental Hygienist with the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology and Detoxing from heavy metals with Dr. Daniel Pompa's PompaCore Certification that includes Diet and Fasting to enhance the detoxing process.
Her passion for wellness began over 20 years ago when research indicated there was an Oral-Systemic Connection to diseases from periodontal disease and since learned of root canals, cavitations, and heavy metals do the same. She became a charter member of the National Network of Healthcare Hygienists, an advanced oral health educator on the oral microbiome and oral cancer. She served 2 years as President of the ADHA.org -Connecticut (2002-2004) and currently one of the Directors of the ConnHyPAC (Connecticut Hygiene Political Action Committee) on behalf of all hygienists seeking advancement of the profession. She also served as a dental specialist with the 157th USAF Clinic, Pease, AFB New Hampshire Air National Guard (1981-1991), and is a patriot of this great nation.
Wanda is also a staunch advocate of the Dental Therapist, a midlevel dental hygiene practitioner that increases access to care in the Public Health sector. She is a member of the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology and the American Academy for Oral Systemic Health, contributing to Making America Healthy Again. Dentistry is renowned for exposure to toxic mercury, root canals and cavitation health related manifestations. Not just patients, but also the dental staff!
She made a priority to be a Board Certified Mental Health Coach from Light University, a Christ led coaching program drawing on biblical principles in all aspects of health in Dec. 2021 as well as Narcissistic and Emotional Abuse in Dec. 2024.

FORTY years as a practicing registered dental hygienist! The plan is moving forward into the Functional Medicine Health Coach space. I am a nerdy hygienist who has found my purpose in this life and have loved dental hygiene since the beginning... I am one of the fortunate people doing something I truly love.
One day, my sisters Susan, Denise, and I, were talking about health care. I was expressing my frustration about hygiene and why there's no autonomy. There are no benefits in most private practices. Dentists tend to keep hygienists in part-time because they will not be obligated to give customary benefits. I have heard it stated by one particular dentist to me directly, 'Hygienists make too much money'. I'm sorry, we earn every single penny! It is considered one of the most hazardous jobs in the world, especially during Covid.
The American Dental Association regulates the Dental Hygiene profession. This is not the case with the nursing profession, nurses have their own regulatory board. True, they were once regulated by the American Medical Association. When the APRN was introduced, this was, in fact, disputed by physicians. Today, physicians cannot be without APRN. You do not see hairstylists, nail technicians, or aestheticians regulated by dermatologists, nor massage therapists or personal trainers regulated by chiropractors or physical therapists.
Hygienists are professionals with licenses and if you ask any hygienist, you will learn just how difficult it is to get into any hygiene program and even harder to get out. I am delighted to know that after 15 years of seeking the next step in our career ladder, CT has finally passed the Dental Therapist, a master's level of care that will help with the Medicaid/Husky public health patients that the majority of dentists do not embrace treatment at minimal reimbursement. (It needs to be implemented asap) It is a great step in the right direction. Personally, IN MY HUMBLE OPINION, I would love to see hygienists have the option to work independently. Three cheers for Colorado and Maine where independent practice is LEGAL. Let's allow access to prophylaxis (prevention) appointments as directly as possible and stop the nonsense of big money going to drug companies.
The other aspect of my story: I also had the unfortunate (perhaps fortunate?) opportunity to experience first-hand what it was like to be married to a guy with Narcissistic Personality Disorder and alcoholism. I recognized the alcohol abuse but ignored the signs and symptoms. Love does that, would you agree? I definitely did NOT recognize the NPD and how it impacted everything. Love bombing is THE HOOK, everything after that became a long journey into Complex-PTSD . There are many techniques a NARC can use on any unsuspecting victim of theirs. Today, I can see NPD a mile away and so can you. Starting over at 55 with your self-esteem in the gutter is an overwhelming challenge .
This is how "Wanna Smile" was born. It was my sisters idea to name my imaginary independent dental hygiene practice "Wanna Smile" because "Wanna" is my nickname, the "Smile" part is obvious. Since I will probably never see independent dental hygiene practice become a reality in my lifetime, "Wanna Smile Wellness" landed here at the doorstep of Health and Wellness Coaching.
